Polestar 1 Officially Revealed As A 600HP Hybrid Coupe With 93 Miles Of EV Range

The new Polestar One is finally out, with the company releasing all the details on their new halo model during a special event in Shanghai.

Set to become a halo model for the brand, the new Polestar One is a two-door, 2+2 seat Gran Tourer that’s powered by a powerful ‘Electric Performance Hybrid’ Powertrain churning out 600hp and 1000Nm (737lb-ft) of torque.

As expected, the new Polestar One is based on Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) but the standalone performance brand claims that around 50 percent of their latest creation is new and bespoke, created by their own engineers. 

This happened because Polestar wants the One to be a true performance coupe, giving it things like an all-new Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi) and a full carbon-fiber bodywork that not only is lighter but also improves torsional stiffness by 45 percent.

Polestar 1's rear axle is powered by two electric motors that also enable torque vectoring for maximum grip and speed while cornering. A four-cylinder 2.0-liter Drive-E engine powers the front axle. The two rear electric motors produce 218hp, allowing the new performance model to run on electricity alone for 150km (93 miles), which is the longest all-electric range of any hybrid model in the market. The Weight distribution is 48:52 front to rear while the brakes come from Akebono and feature six-piston calipers and 400mm discs.

"Polestar 1 is the first car to carry the Polestar on the bonnet," said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar. "A beautiful GT with amazing technology packed into it - a great start for our new Polestar brand. All future cars from Polestar will feature a fully electric Drivetrain, delivering on our brand vision of being the new standalone electric performance brand".

As for when we are going to see it launching into the market, the company says that production will begin in mid-2019 at a new, state-of-the-art Polestar Production Center in Chengdu, China. The production facility is currently under construction and is expected to be complete in mid-2018. 

Polestar will adopt a subscription sales model instead of the traditional one, with cars to be ordered 100% online and offered on a two- or three-year subscription basis. The subscription will have no deposit and will be all-inclusive, meaning delivery, maintenance, insurance and the option to use other Polestar or Volvo models for a flat monthly fee. Polestar will also offer an online concierge service via a mobile app. 

Polestar also announced that its future models will be all-electric ones, starting with the Polestar 2 which will enter production in 2019 as the first battery-electric model from the Volvo Car Group. The company even names the Tesla Model 3 as the main rival for their upcoming mid-sized EV. The initial Polestar product rollout will be completed with the launch of the Polestar 3, a mid-sized all-electric SUV.

Customers can pre-order the new Polestar 1 as of now, as the company is accepting “expressions of interest” immediately.

2018 Ford Mustang GT Gets Sticky New Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S Rubber

Theirs may not be the sexiest part of a car, but they are among the most important. “Because a lot is riding on your tires,” as Michelin put it. 

That's especially true of high-performance automobiles, in which the limits of adhesion are more likely to be pushed.

Hugely powerful and capable cars like the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso and Mercedes-AMG E63 where the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, and now a far more accessible vehicle is offering them as well.

Building on the experience gained from the Ford GT and Shelby GT350, Michelin and Ford are now offering a specially developed version of the Pilot Sport 4 S on the 2018 Mustang GT. The 19-inch tires, sport 40-series sidewalls and measure 255 millimeters up front and 275 in the back to give the eight-cylinder pony car plenty of traction.

The summer tires replace the standard 235/50R18 rubber (or the available 255/40R19 all-season tires), and come as part of the Performance Package (as fitted on the orange example pictured). For $3,995, the pack also includes the 19-inch wheels on which the new tires are mounted, as well as Brembo brakes, Torsen limited-slip differential, upgraded suspension components, and enhanced trim.

2018 Range Rover With New Plug-in Hybrid Variant

Following a leak earlier today, Land Rover has unveiled the 2018 Range Rover.

Looking instantly recognizable, the updated model has a new front fascia with a revised grille. The luxury off-reader has also been equipped with Pixel-laser, LED headlights and new taillights.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as designers added a new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system that features two 10-inch touchscreen displays. The company didn't stop there as they installed new 24-way power front seats, revised switchgear, and updated door panels.

The rear seats are also new as they can recline by up to 40 degrees and be set to one of 25 different massage programs. Other highlights include a new 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and several new charging ports.

Under the hood, there's a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, and a 13.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This setup enables the model to produce a combined maximum output of 404 PS (297 kW) and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft) of torque. In terms of performance, the Range Rover PHEV can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds, hit a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h), and travel up to 31 miles (51 km) on electricity alone.

Customers looking for something more powerful can check out the upgraded SVAutobiography Dynamic which has a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 565 PS (415 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to the extra power, the model runs from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds

The 2018 Range Rover is currently available to order and U.K. Deliveries are slated to occur late this year.

Toyota GR HV Sports Concept Debuts With Targa Roof And Hybrid Powertrain

Toyota is celebrating its online premiere of the all-new GR HV Concept, ahead of its public debut, which will take place at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, at the end of the month.

The name stands for Gazoo Racing (GR), whereas HV initials refer to Hybrid Vehicles, and supposedly said to have been inspired by the legendary Supra and Sport 800 racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Visually, the new car show looks like in the current generation of 86, even if the automaker does not make a reference to it, featuring new front and rear ends, LED headlamps, a small boot cap spoiler, a central exhaust pipe inserted into the diffuser, and Targa-style roof. The exterior is dominated by matte black, and the concept is also equipped with hood features to provide additional cooling to the powertrain.

By the way, Toyota GR HV uses an unspecified hybrid powertrain, which drives output backwards through automatic transmission. However, the driver can also choose a six-speed manual operation, using a compact H-gear shift, with a touch of a button.

Another cool feature is the ignition button, which is located on the automatic transmission lever, and additional points to the water meter, oil, and additional water gauge shown on the infotainment system.

FV-Frangivento Asfanè Hypercar Lands In Monaco From Space

If you're walking along, minding your own business and suddenly come across a vehicle that looks like this, you might want to look up just to make sure there aren't any mother-ships lurking in the clouds.

Thankfully, we have Will Smith for those types of issues, though we're not going to need him this time since the Asfanè is a man-made object, designed and built in Italy.

The FV-Frangivento Asfanè is 4.6 meters (15 ft) long, 2.05 meters (6.7 ft) wide and stands just 1.15 meters (3.7 ft) high, featuring a hand-cut aluminum body and a hypothetical all-electric power output of 660 kW, roughly 900 PS.

Spotted in Monaco recently by Autogespot user Jasper1, this particular car, unlike the concept that debuted in Bologna last year, looks very much road-legal, with a pair of wing mirrors on each side and a windscreen you can actually see through, not to mention the new color scheme.

It's possible that this is the first or one of the first customer cars, hence the California plates. Then again, details remain scarce, so at this point we're just speculating.

What we do know for sure is that Italy still "has it" when it comes to building something exotic.

McLaren-Alpine 2018 Livery Study Really Has Us Wondering Pretty Interesting

After three extremely difficult seasons, McLaren and Honda have finally parted ways, with the former signing a partnership with Renault, which will come into effect next season.

According to reports, Renault will supply McLaren with the same engines it provides for its own factory team, as well as currently, Red Bull Racing, while Toro Rosso will make the switch to Honda.

But what does this mean for McLaren in terms of branding and liveries? Are they going to stick with their new orange theme? Revert to black? Mix Renault colors with their own? One designer might have a solution.

These renders were drawn up by Sean Bull Design, and represent a McLaren-Alpine race car, where on one hand you've got McLaren colors in the orange and black, but also a lot of blue, which is associated with Renault.

Naming the team McLaren-Alpine instead of McLaren-Renault is pretty interesting, although whether the British outfit will agree to make Renault such a huge part of their brand identity (like they did with Mercedes), remains to be seen.

Whichever way they decide to go, we can at least hope that their struggles in keeping up with the rest of the field might come to an end, since an all-round decent power unit should turn the focus back on aerodynamics - which is something McLaren has excelled at.

Gorgeous EXP12 Speed 6e Heading To Production As Bentley’s First EV In 2019

Bentley‘s first all-electric vehicle will be based on the beautiful EXP12 Speed 6e EV concept shown in Geneva this year. 

The electric two-seater roadster could go into production as early as 2019, after Bentley ditched its plans for a smaller than the Bentayga SUV. 

Bentley’s CEO Wolfgang Durheimer said to Autocar about the company’s decision: “What I can say is that a small SUV is no longer on the scheme. We’re favouring a car with full electric powertrain.”

Bentley’s first electric model will most probably share Porsche’s dedicated EV platform of the Mission E model. The company targets a driving range up to 300 miles, along with all-wheel drive, courtesy of dual electric motors. 

Bentley has also confirmed that they’re going to launch three plug-in hybrids in the near future: the already confirmed Bentayga V6 PHEV which is expected to hit the market first, followed by the Continental GT and Flying Spur.

Producing Just 209 Units - Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta Sells For $9.98 Million

The final Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta has sold for a staggering 8.3 million euros ($9.98 million) at auction.

Ferrari initially intended on producing just 209 units of the droptop LaFerrari, nine of which would remain within the company for promotional use. However, it decided to build a 210th example to raise funds to benefit the Save the Children charity.

Compared to all other LaFerrari Apertas, this example is adorned in Rosso Corsa paint accented by white stripes on the hood and engine cover. Inside, it is covered in beautiful black Alcantara upholstery, gloss carbon fiber and red stitching.

Prior to the auction, RM Sotheby’s estimated the car would sell for between 3 and 4 million euros but that was obviously conservative from the get-go, especially considering the final LaFerrari coupe sold for $7 million late last year.

New BMW X7 iPerformance Concept With Feature a Fuel-Cell Powertrain

BMW promised to unveil something pretty big at the Frankfurt Motor Show and they weren't kidding as the company will introduce the new X7 iPerformance concept.

Designed to preview the upcoming production model, the pictures provided by Wheelsage show the concept is a massive crossover with an enormous grille that is gaudy enough to make an Escalade blush. The bold styling is visible elsewhere as the concept has vertical styling elements in the front air intakes and an impressive amount of metallic trim.

Moving further back, we can see flush-mounted door handles and an electric charging port on the front fender. Designers also installed massive alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof. Rounding out the styling features are a ventilated rear bumper and slender taillights.

The cabin takes a different approach as it appears much more luxurious and subtle than the exterior. Details will be announced on September 8th but we can see the concept has two-tone leather seats, wood trim, and bright accents. Technology will also pay a major role as drivers will be surrounded by a digital instrument cluster, an iDrive infotainment system, and a futuristic steering wheel.

While rumors initially suggested the concept would feature a fuel-cell powertrain, that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, the X7 iPerformance will likely use a plug-in hybrid powertrain like the 740e iPerformance which has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is backed up by an electric motor and a 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The production model is slated to be offered with at least three different engines including a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder with 335 hp (250 kW) and a 4.4-liter TwinTurbo Turbo V8 developing 445 hp (332 kW). There could also be a diesel-powered X7 xDrive 40d but a U.S. launch remains uncertain at this point.

2017 September - New Ford Ranger

Ford is celebrating the success of the Ranger, which is Europe's top selling pickup truck in July, with 23,100 units sold, by launching a new Black Edition. 

Pricing has yet to be announced, but the automaker says that it's based on the Limited series, and it's coming in just 2,500 units, all of them in a Double Cab body style. 

The Ford Ranger Black Edition sets itself apart by featuring a de-chromed body, finished in Absolute Black, and by carrying a dark finish for the grille, sports bar, alloy wheels, and other exterior detailing. 

Standard equipment specification includes the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen display, reversing camera, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, leather seat trim, power-foiling heated side mirrors, and front parking sensors. 

"Ranger customers appreciate the vehicle's tough, go-anywhere capability, and its rugged good looks, and we expect this attractive new limited series to be snapped up within weeks", said Ford of Europe's General Manager for Commercial Vehicles, Hans Schep. 

Ford will have the new Ranger Black Edition on display at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, from September 12.

2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Arrives With New Standard Equipment and Several New Options

The Alfa Romeo Giulia got off to a bit of a rocky start but the company is hoping for greater success this year.

As part of this initiative, Alfa Romeo has introduced the 2018 Giulia which comes with new standard equipment and several new options.

Starting with the equipment, the Giulia and Giulia Sport gain chrome speaker surrounds on the doors to add a splash of style to the cabin. The Giulia Ti goes in a slightly different direction as the model now has 18-inch polished aluminum wheels with a double Y-spoke design. Lastly, the range-topping Giulia Quadrifoglio gains a host of new standard features including a Harmon Kardon premium audio system and a forward collision warning plus system.

On the options front, all models can be equipped with a cargo convenience package as well as an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Giulia and Giulia Sport also offer a Harmon Kardon audio system, an infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display, and a new driver assistance package. Customers can also order a new two-tone leather interior with dark gray accent stitching.

The Ti Sport, on the other hand, offers two new 19-inch aluminum wheel options as well as a Ti Sport Performance Package. The latter item adds an active suspension as well as a limited-slip differential.

Rounding out the changes is a light walnut wood trim option on the Giulia Ti Lusso and a Driver Assistance Dynamic Package on the Quadrifoglio. The package includes automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control plus with full-stop, and a lane departure warning system.

Honda Has Only Sold Two NSXs Since Last Year's Launch In Australia

  The Acura / Honda NSX is truly an impressive machine but there's no hiding the fact that demand has tapered off since the supercar was launched.

While Honda recently announced plans to increase its allocations to the United Kingdom due to overwhelming demand, it seems the country is an outlier especially compared to Australia.

CarAdvice reports Honda confirmed they have only sold two NSXs in the country since the model was launched last year. To put that number into perspective, Audi has sold 21 R8 V10 plus models this year alone. The numbers don't look any better when you compare NSX sales to other vehicles such as the Mercedes-AMG GT or Nissan GT-R Nismo as the automakers have sold 72 and 21 units, respectively.

Despite the slow sales, Honda doesn't seem concerned as public relations manager Neil McDonald said the NSX is halo vehicle and it "wasn’t positioned, nor was it expected, to chase outright volume sales." McDonald went on to say "[The] NSX has allowed Honda to raise the profile of the brand here through its hybrid technology, performance, exclusivity, and ultimately the type of driving experience that evokes memories of the original NSX, but through a 21st century execution.” 

As a result, Honda is happy with the response and notes three new orders are in the works. When that occurs, Honda will have more than doubled sales of the NSX in Australia.
